Well-known places
Well-known places in Hamburg: where can you smoke?
Landmark, park or shopping street: this is how we assess well-known places in Hamburg under § 5 KCanG – each with its own map extract.

Binnenalster & Jungfernstieg
Around Jungfernstieg our map draws several playground zones – large stretches of the promenade are therefore likely to sit inside a no-consumption zone.
The Binnenalster promenade is Hamburg’s living room: Alster ferries, shopping streets, steps and benches packed in summer. According to our map data, several children’s playgrounds sit right on the waterfront, and their 100-metre radii overlap to cover much of Jungfernstieg. On top of that, some sections are designated pedestrian areas, where the 7 a.m.–8 p.m. time ban applies as well. And because families are around constantly, the rule about the immediate presence of minors matters here in particular.

Mönckebergstraße
Whether Mönckebergstraße counts as a pedestrian zone under § 5 KCanG is not clear-cut – during the day there is still much to be said for caution.
Running between the central station and the town hall, Mönckebergstraße is Hamburg’s best-known shopping mile. Unlike a classic pedestrian zone it is still open to buses and taxis, and our map draws no pedestrian zone here – so whether the daily 7 a.m.–8 p.m. ban under § 5(2) no. 5 KCanG applies cannot be said with confidence. Either way, individual facilities nearby carry their own 100-metre zone, which applies around the clock. Neighbouring Spitalerstraße, by contrast, is a designated pedestrian zone, where the time window is unambiguous.

Stadtpark (city park)
The Stadtpark is big enough to have zone-free areas – but around the daycare, playgrounds and sports grounds our map draws dense no-consumption zones.
The Stadtpark in Winterhude is Hamburg’s big lawn. Parks are not banned across the board under the KCanG – what matters are the facilities inside them, and there are a few here: our map data shows a daycare centre, several publicly accessible sports grounds and playgrounds within the park, each with a 100-metre radius around its entrance. Between those islands, wide stretches of meadow carry no drawn zone at all. Consuming in the immediate presence of minors is always prohibited, though – and on a summer day in the Stadtpark they are hard to avoid.

Landungsbrücken & harbour promenade
Right at the waterfront our map draws no zone – but individual sports facilities and a playground just inland come close.
Elbe views, harbour ferries, streams of tourists: the Landungsbrücken are one of the city’s most visited corners. There is no blanket consumption ban here, and according to our map data the promenade itself stays clear of drawn zones. A few hundred metres inland, however, St. Pauli quickly turns into a patchwork – sports facilities and playgrounds pull their 100-metre radii almost up to the promenade. Anyone planning to consume here should check the exact location on the map first.

Reeperbahn & Spielbudenplatz
The Kiez is tighter than it looks: around Spielbudenplatz our map draws a sports facility and several daycare centres, each with a 100-metre radius.
Hamburg’s entertainment mile has a reputation for anything going at night – for cannabis that only holds up in part. According to our map data, several daycare centres and a publicly accessible sports facility sit in the side streets, and their 100-metre zones reach across parts of the Reeperbahn. Those zones apply around the clock – unlike the 7 a.m.–8 p.m. window, which only bites where a pedestrian zone is actually designated. The map extract shows which stretches stay clear according to our data.
All assessments are based on our current map data and can change at any time – new facilities create new no-consumption zones. What counts is the situation on the ground; the live map above and the app always show the current data.

Pedestrian zones
From what time can you smoke in Hamburg? Pedestrian zones and the 7-to-8 rule
In pedestrian zones, cannabis consumption is banned daily between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. under § 5(2) no. 5 KCanG – from 8 p.m. it is generally permitted there, unless another no-consumption zone applies. What always counts is how the area is designated on the ground. Well-known pedestrian areas in Hamburg include:
- Spitalerstraße
- Mönckebergstraße – still open to buses and taxis – whether it counts as a pedestrian zone in the sense of the law is not clear-cut
- Ottenser Hauptstraße

Common questions
Smoking weed in Hamburg: the rules
Where is cannabis consumption allowed in Hamburg?
Consumption is allowed in Hamburg anywhere no zone under Section 5 KCanG applies: more than 100 meters from the entrances of schools, playgrounds, daycare centers, youth facilities and sports grounds, outside pedestrian zones during the 7 a.m.–8 p.m. ban, and never in the immediate presence of minors. The map shows every zone in Hamburg at a glance.
Can you smoke weed in the Spitalerstraße pedestrian zone?
Spitalerstraße is one of the well-known pedestrian areas in Hamburg. Where a pedestrian zone is designated, the ban under § 5(2) no. 5 KCanG applies daily between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. – in the evening and at night consumption is generally allowed there, unless another no-consumption zone applies, such as a school or daycare within sight. Whether an individual stretch is actually designated a pedestrian zone can vary; the signage on the ground is what binds.
How many no-consumption zones does Hamburg have?
In central Hamburg alone, the Verbotszonen App tracks 1,946 facilities, each creating a no-consumption zone with a 100-meter radius – including 238 schools and 558 playgrounds. Across the whole city there are considerably more.
Can you smoke weed at Hamburg central station?
Our map draws no facility zones in the immediate surroundings of the central station – the difficulty here comes from elsewhere. On the station premises themselves Deutsche Bahn exercises house rules, and adjoining Spitalerstraße is a designated pedestrian zone, where the ban under § 5(2) no. 5 KCanG applies daily between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. In the evening the legal picture eases, but the station forecourt stays a busy place, often with minors around.
Can you smoke weed at the Außenalster?
According to our map data, large parts of the green spaces around the Außenalster lie outside any drawn no-consumption zone – the exceptions are individual daycare centres and playgrounds along the shore, plus the rowing clubs’ sports grounds, each with a 100-metre radius around its entrance. And as everywhere: never in the immediate presence of minors.
