Our map draws few zones on Schlossplatz – but as a pedestrian area the 7 a.m.–8 p.m. window is likely to apply.

Schlossplatz, with its jubilee column and the lawns in front of the Neues Schloss, is Stuttgart’s central meeting point. Our map draws it as a pedestrian area, so the ban under § 5(2) no. 5 KCanG applies between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Facility zones are thin here: according to our map data the Junges Schloss children’s museum is about 150 metres away and the nearest playground just under 285. On warm evenings the lawns fill up, regularly with teenagers among the crowd.

Königstraße

Königstraße is a pedestrian zone – and our map draws five playgrounds within 300 metres on top of that.

Königstraße counts as one of Germany’s longest shopping pedestrian zones and is drawn as one on our map, so the 7 a.m.–8 p.m. window applies to begin with. What is unusual is the density around it: according to our map data five playgrounds lie within 300 metres, the nearest about 110 metres away, plus the children’s museum and a daycare centre. Their 100-metre radii apply around the clock and, depending on the stretch, reach the street itself – so the evening ends the time window, but not every zone.

Upper & middle Schlossgarten

In the Schlossgarten our map data puts a Gymnasium less than 100 metres away – plus several sports areas.

The band of parkland from the central station to the Rosensteinpark is Stuttgart’s green axis. Parks are not banned across the board under the KCanG – what matters are the facilities, and in the upper Schlossgarten several sit close together: according to our map data the Königin-Katharina-Stift-Gymnasium is about 97 metres from the centre of this extract, four sports areas follow between 120 and 240 metres, and a playground at 265. Further towards the middle Schlossgarten the picture opens up, with larger meadows carrying no drawn zone.

Karlshöhe

Our map draws no zone on the viewpoint hill itself – but a school, sports areas and playgrounds sit at the foot of the slope.

The Karlshöhe is the lookout hill above Stuttgart’s west side, with a beer garden and views across the valley basin. According to our map data the summit stays clear of drawn zones – the nearest entry, a Gymnasium with an attached Realschule, is about 107 metres down the slope, with sports areas from 114 metres and two playgrounds. Because the hill is small, your exact position decides: a few steps downhill can already put you inside a zone. The beer garden is subject to the operator’s house rules as well.

Königstraße is one of the well-known pedestrian areas in Stuttgart. Where a pedestrian zone is designated, the ban under § 5(2) no. 5 KCanG applies daily between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. – in the evening and at night consumption is generally allowed there, unless another no-consumption zone applies, such as a school or daycare within sight. Whether an individual stretch is actually designated a pedestrian zone can vary; the signage on the ground is what binds.

How many no-consumption zones does Stuttgart have?
