Well-known places in Munich: where can you smoke?

Landmark, park or shopping street: this is how we assess well-known places in Munich under § 5 KCanG – each with its own map extract.

Marienplatz & Kaufingerstraße

Marienplatz and Kaufingerstraße form Munich’s core pedestrian zone – during the day, everything points to the 7 a.m.–8 p.m. ban applying.

Between the town hall and Karlstor runs Bavaria’s busiest shopping axis, and our map draws the area as a pedestrian zone. That brings § 5(2) no. 5 KCanG into play: consumption is banned there daily between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m., and is generally possible in the evening unless another zone intervenes. Facility zones are comparatively sparse here – according to our map data the nearest recorded school is about 160 metres away. Bear in mind that enforcement in Bavaria tends to be more consistent than in some other federal states.

Englischer Garten

Our map draws no zone across the big meadows – but around the Chinese Tower and the playgrounds it gets tight.

The Englischer Garten is larger than Central Park, and that expanse is why much remains possible here: parks are not banned across the board under the KCanG – what matters are the facilities inside. According to our map data the playgrounds by the Chinese Tower are about 140 metres from the centre of this map extract, and within 300 metres there are several schools and sports areas as well, each with a 100-metre radius around its entrance. Between those islands, broad meadows carry no drawn zone. Around the beer gardens, though, expect a family crowd – and consuming in the immediate presence of minors is always prohibited.

Isar riverbank & Flaucher

At the Flaucher our map draws no zone on the riverbank itself – but several playgrounds sit nearby.

Gravel banks, barbecue spots, half of Munich in summer: the Flaucher is the classic among the city’s Isar stretches. According to our map data the riverbank itself stays clear of drawn zones, but within 300 metres there are four playgrounds whose 100-metre radii catch individual access points and meadows. Some of the paths are also designated pedestrian areas, where the 7 a.m.–8 p.m. window applies on top. On warm days there are plenty of families about.

Bubatzkarte Munich: cannabis no-consumption zones around OlympiaparkOpen the map extract at full resolution (new tab)

Olympiapark

The Olympiapark is far more of a patchwork than it looks: according to our map data there are more than 40 sports facilities within 300 metres.

Anyone who takes the Olympiapark for one big open lawn underestimates its origins: it is first and foremost a sports complex. Under § 5 KCanG, publicly accessible sports facilities create a no-consumption zone with a 100-metre radius, and according to our map data we count more than 40 of them within 300 metres of the Olympiaberg alone – tennis courts, practice walls and other grounds, the nearest a good 120 metres away. Their radii overlap extensively. Areas without a drawn zone do remain between the facilities and on the hills, but they are smaller than the overall impression suggests.

Bubatzkarte Munich: cannabis no-consumption zones around ViktualienmarktOpen the map extract at full resolution (new tab)

Viktualienmarkt

The Viktualienmarkt is a pedestrian area – so consumption is likely prohibited there between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Munich’s best-known food market sits in the middle of the old town and is drawn as a pedestrian area on our map. That brings the daily 7 a.m.–8 p.m. window into play – precisely during market opening hours. Facility zones lie a little further out: according to our map data the nearest schools, daycare centres and sports areas are about 240 metres away, and their radii do not reach the market grounds. For the beer garden in the middle, the operator’s house rules apply on top.

All assessments are based on our current map data and can change at any time – new facilities create new no-consumption zones. What counts is the situation on the ground; the live map above and the app always show the current data.

Common questions

Smoking weed in Munich: the rules

Where is cannabis consumption allowed in Munich?

Consumption is allowed in Munich anywhere no zone under Section 5 KCanG applies: more than 100 meters from the entrances of schools, playgrounds, daycare centers, youth facilities and sports grounds, outside pedestrian zones during the 7 a.m.–8 p.m. ban, and never in the immediate presence of minors. The map shows every zone in Munich at a glance.

Can you smoke weed in the Kaufingerstraße pedestrian zone?

Kaufingerstraße is one of the well-known pedestrian areas in Munich. Where a pedestrian zone is designated, the ban under § 5(2) no. 5 KCanG applies daily between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. – in the evening and at night consumption is generally allowed there, unless another no-consumption zone applies, such as a school or daycare within sight. Whether an individual stretch is actually designated a pedestrian zone can vary; the signage on the ground is what binds.

How many no-consumption zones does Munich have?

In central Munich alone, the Verbotszonen App tracks 3,241 facilities, each creating a no-consumption zone with a 100-meter radius – including 341 schools and 1,161 playgrounds. Across the whole city there are considerably more.

Can you smoke weed in the Englischer Garten?

A park is not banned across the board under the KCanG, and the Englischer Garten is big enough that, according to our map data, broad meadows lie outside any drawn zone. The exceptions are the playgrounds – by the Chinese Tower, for instance – along with schools and sports grounds at the edges, each creating a zone with a 100-metre radius around its entrance. Expect families around the beer gardens, and consuming in the immediate presence of minors is always prohibited.

Can you smoke weed by the Isar?

According to our map data the Isar meadows are free of drawn no-consumption zones over long stretches – at the Flaucher, for example, the riverbank itself stays zone-free. The exceptions are the playgrounds along the river and individual sports grounds with their 100-metre radii, plus sections designated as pedestrian areas, which fall under the 7 a.m.–8 p.m. window. On summer days the gravel banks are busy, often with families.
